People Reblogging Me…
Tagging topics on a site like Tumblr or Twitter is incredibly important to get your message, ideas and other such things out there… and some times it can come back to bite you in the ass.
For instance, I write about a new book I’m reading and tag about it and I get an anon calling me homophobic for talking about how a gay author writes straight and gay characters differently from most authors that I’ve read.
Sometimes I get really great things like posting links to an article about Portal and people share that because… well… it’s Portal and everyone loves Portal and it helps my business and online persona. BUT occasionally I’ll write about something like a news story that’s happening at the moment and some one uses that as a place to reblog and soap box… and that’s great… but some times their soap boxing flies directly in contradiction with what I’m doing.
For instance, Occupy is over and I posted a link in one of my posts to the live feed of the take down of the Occupy Wall Street camp at Zuccotti Park. I thought it was fascinating and with the blur of media coming in from iphones, laptops, web cams, news feeds and more it was like an overload of emotional moments from this small corner of the earth that stands for so much.
That having been said some one reblogged that post and then wrote all the NYC police hot line numbers and said to call them. I AM ONE HUNDRED PERCENT AGAINST THIS. I’ve been in a situation where I needed police assistance and wasn’t able to get it at the right time because I was put on hold. Why? I don’t know… I don’t get to know that kind of thing… but in NYC at 2am maybe it’s not a good idea to tie up the phone lines of the busiest city in America. Just a thought.
I know we all have a voice and want to be heard ESPECIALLY when our ideals are being trampled live on the internet… BUT to then abuse a phone line that’s used FOR EMERGENCIES in order to feel like you’re part of something is way out of line and I can’t stand for that at all.
No amount of calling would do anything… no amount of dialing, leaving messages, screaming about it to some poor operator is going to really stop something that was already in the process of being done.
Being angry is part of the human experience and wanting to shout at some one for it is totally understandable but be smart about it people…
