Hey Star Wars Fans, CALM YOUR SHIT!

Everyone had this same freak out a while ago when Disney acquired Marvel Comics. Then what happened? We got Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, fighting together on the silver screen and it was AWESOME. They didn’t change the comics, they didn’t push their agenda to make Marvel water down their content or force Disney characters into the books. We haven’t even seen official cross over art or merchandise.

So why are you all freaking out that the same company that made the best true comic book movie of the past decade (The Dark Knight being so grounded in reality that it feels more like a crime film), is taking over Star Wars? Let’s face facts… George Lucas was ruining this franchise slowly and not appeasing anyone in the process.

George Lucas spanwed a great franchise in the 1970s when he created Star Wars but that doesn’t mean he’s solely responsible for how great it is. He worked with a lot of people on the franchise over the years to make it a success. Then he decided he had to go back and start tinkering and that’s when things got complicated. Star Wars was no longer this pure experience for anyone and George had final say, even on films he didn’t actually direct.

George gets all the credit in the world for Star Wars, Empire and Jedi when in fact he didn’t write or direct the next two films. Lawrence Kasden wrote Empire and Jedi and Irving Kirshner and Richard Marquand directed the two films respectively. Sadly neither of them are with us today to see what the franchise they shot into perfection would be come.

Restraints and restrictions made Star Wars what it was in 1977. The studios capped the budget, the fx people had to figure out how to do pretty much everything from scratch and even those brilliant dog fighting scenes that they captured weren’t original. They were story boarded from WWII dog fighting footage which is part of what made them so real. George couldn’t do everything he wanted and because of that he was reigned in. He had to make compromises… the exact opposite of what he had to do on Episodes 1 through 3.

So now the big news comes. Lucasfilm is sold for billions to Disney and they’re going to make another Star Wars film for release in 2015 and George will supervise the process but he will not be writing or directing the film. That means we get FRESH TALENT! A new director gets to step up to the plate for the first time since The Empire Strikes Back and create something new and special.

How is that a bad thing? What was George Lucas going to give you? STAR WARS DETOURS! Do you really want that? Is that really the Star Wars content you wanted? No you want a new movie… and why not a new movie from a company that knows what they’re doing. Disney knows how to do this. They did it with The Avengers, they’re going to do it with Iron Man 3, Captain America 2 and Thor 2 and the same summer as Avengers 2 we’ll have a new story from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

For the first time since 1999 I have hope for the Star Wars franchise. I have a feeling we’ll see something magical happen here and you’ll all be pleasantly surprised by how great it is.

May the Force Be With You.
